BEHIND THE PLANET

Real Mars. Simplified physics.

Surface imagery: NASA Viking / USGS. Elevation: NASA GSFC MOLA / NASA PDS. The globe uses a 4,096 × 2,048 color mosaic and a 1,440 × 720 measured elevation grid. Relief is rendered at true scale, so Mars is nearly spherical.

What the controls mean

Sea level fills every location below a chosen elevation, including isolated basins. It assumes unlimited added water and does not model drainage, transport or time. Flooded area is weighted by latitude.

Pressure and temperature are independent inputs, not outputs of a climate forecast. Water state uses a simplified pure-water phase check. Ice, haze and vegetation are visual approximations. Vegetation is speculative and appears only on suitable unflooded terrain under the selected conditions.

This model does not estimate the energy, resources, radiation protection, oxygen or time needed to terraform Mars. A warm planet is not automatically breathable or habitable.
